Say it again, Mitt!!!!

In case you missed it, today Mitt Romney is in trouble for something he said about Obama supporters.  The clip is provided below.

Now that this video is out there for all to see, today's newspapers are filled with Mr. Romney's crawfishing.  He is now attempting to argue that his words were not well thought out or were not "elegant" - whatever that means.

To that I say, "Please stop it!"

Mr. Romney, it is time for you to realize that you are most likely going to lose in November.  In football language, it is fourth and 21, you are at your own 13 yard-line with 8 seconds to go and you are losing by 7 points.  It is time to throw a Hail Mary and see if you can pull out a miracle.

The miracle in this case will be convincing Independents out there that your words, captured in this Youtube clip, are what you believe.

To be honest with you, as a Libertarian, I needed to hear these words.  I have not been excited about your candidacy for one minute.  Now, if what you said here is what you believe, and if it suggests a manner in which you would run the country, I am more inclined to vote for you instead of writing down "Ron Paul" once again.

So, on behalf of those of us who are not excited about you, please keep saying this.  Do not apologize.  In fact, you need to say it more, say it louder and say it in a way that people like me will actively support you and try to convince others to do the same.

Remember, Mr. Romney, you told the truth so do not apologize for this.

Embrace it and throw the Hail Mary!

  1. The problem with his statement is that it sounds like an excuse for not being ahead in the polls. Of the 47% who do not pay taxes, many are seniors and military who support him. Instead of saying he can't get those 47%, he should be educating those who are on the dole and let them know that their benefits are bankrupting the country. He should be working to get those 47%. I know SSI cannot be as much when I retire as it is now so I am trying to save as much as I can. I know that I will not be able to retire at 65 unless I am willing to take a large drop in my standard of living. Too many people believe the cure is to tax more and spend more.

  2. Jack,

I'm not sure which of Romney's words in the clip are making you so ecstatic. Is it the part about people who don't pay income tax being freeloaders? Just wondering if it's possible that at least some of those folks are actually your students and mine, who perhaps even after they have their degree still won't be able to find a job that pays enough to require them to pay income tax. I can't see how they would be considering themselves as entitled, as R. characterized them, committed as they are to trying to better their lot.

      - And do you know who we have to thank for this? The wonderful government for giving out guaranteed student loans and federal subsidies for higher education. This is the very reason college tuition has been inflating in the same manner that housing prices did during the housing bubble. This is just my observation as a current student at UCF, but there are far too many people currently attending college who are using up university resources and therefore driving up costs for the university and a good chunk of them are partying every damn weekend, choosing not to work their butts off like I do and are going off into the wonderful world of unemployment with useless degrees in art history. Wondering why our tuition rates keep increasing? Our student population is at a record high 60,048 this semester and I can barely even find a parking spot on campus these days.

It's simple economics -- when the government tries to artificially stimulate demand with federal student loans, this causes artificial inflation in college tuition. More subsidized loans means greater demand for the college educations those loans buy, which raises the market price for college tuition. President Obama recently said that "no family should have to set aside a college acceptance letter because they don't have the money", but the irony here lies in the fact that if the government had not gotten involved in higher education in the first place, a standard college tuition would be much more affordable for the average kid out of high school. In fact there was a study done not too long ago in the WSJ that found that tuition at for-profit schools where students receive federal aid was 75% higher than at comparable for-profit schools whose students don’t receive any aid.

And because there are so many of us now enrolled in college, this means there's an increasing number of us graduating with bachelor's degrees and going out into the labor force...what happens when everybody in the country now has a bachelor's degree? It renders that degree utterly worthless as a measure of competitiveness, and that decreases the rate of return to said college degree. We're getting to the point where an associate's degree is now essentially the equivalent of a high school diploma, a bachelor's degree is the equivalent of an associate's degree, a master's degree is the equivalent of a bachelor's degree and a doctoral degree is the equivalent of a master's degree. Because of this, I am going to have to go for my master's degree as soon as a finish undergrad. But at the rate tuition has been increasing thanks to the government stimulating demand, how in the world am I going to be able to afford my graduate school education without putting myself in thousands of dollars in debt?

  3. This is a guy who's charitable donations are in the tens of millions of dollars. Clearly Mr. Romney believes in helping his fellow man.

He just needs to clarify by saying that "Just because I'm against the govenment doing something, doesn't mean I'm against it completely."

  4. These words are encouraging to hear from Romney, but he will have to do a bit more convincing for me to vote for him. As far as social issues go, there's still quite a bit on the Republican platform that I don't agree with and honestly, speaking as someone who has both met and come to know a few illegal immigrants throughout my life, I can honestly say that they are some of the hardest working people I've ever met in my life who take the sort of jobs that most Americans wouldn't dare to do and they always seem to appreciate the "American Dream" better than anyone...so just for the sake of their families, the GOP's platform on illegal immigration scares me very much.

I think I'd rather just give my vote to Gary Johnson even though it won't matter in the overall election because I'm getting quite fed up of the status quo and I find both Democrats and Republicans to be two sides of the same coin. I feel like it's always either the left empowering the state far too much with its welfarism or the right empowering big businesses with its corporate subsidies and crony capitalism and in the end it's always us taxpayers picking up the tab for it. I find neither party to be conducive to liberty or happiness and instead they both come off as two flavors of the same government to me. I feel like we're overall going to end up worse off in another decade or two because of the people who continually buy in to this crony-capitalist-welfarist system by sticking with one of the two parties every election year...so for that reason I've decided not to vote for Romney and just support Libertarian candidates like Governor Johnson instead for the next couple election years.
